TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (BP)–When the Florida State Seminoles take the field Sept. 4 in Tallahassee to play the Samford University Bulldogs, they will be without Coach Bobby Bowden for the first time in 35 years.
Although Bowden will be “cheering like mad for Florida State,” he won’t be at the game, the coaching legend told Florida Baptist Witness in a recent telephone interview.
“I’m not going to come to any games this year because I want Jimbo to have the freedom of not having me hanging around,” Bowden said of his successor as head coach of the Seminoles.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (BP)--The cheerleading coach of California Baptist University was killed and a dozen cross country team members were injured Aug. 9 in a three-vehicle multiple-fatality accident on California Highway 395 near Bishop, Calif.
Wendy Rice was driving one of three vans carrying CBU student athletes to a high altitude training camp in Mammoth, Calif. Rice died when the van was struck by an oncoming SUV that apparently ran out of control, overturned and burst into flames on impact.

TAMPA, Fla. (BP)--Tony Dungy no longer needs the game-day apparel and gear of an NFL head coach, but that doesn't keep him from donning distinctively different attire when the occasion calls for it.
"They asked me to play John the Baptist," Dungy said of his church's Easter pageant, in which he baptized his 18-year-old son Eric, who was playing Jesus.
"It was just really moving," Dungy said. "I was just so proud of him." Smiling at the memory of the moment, Dungy credited his son with having "a heart" to practice and rehearse.
